Reservation: Boon or a Curse?

Reservation: Boon or a Curse?

Before discussing whether the reservation system is just or not, let's see what exactly it is.

Reservation was done after the independence by the Mandal Commission under PM Morarji Desai for the development of backward groups and providing equal opportunities to them so that they could also have access to the resources and opportunities.

Reservation was important back then because those backward groups had been oppressed and exploited for a long time before independence which had made them weaker economically, socially, politically and educationally. But even after more than 75 years of Independence, is it still necessary?

I think so. I know for a fact that India has developed itself a lot in every sector and position of the backward classes have been improved since independence but I still see the need of reservation because it encourages the people to participate in the competition knowing that they have been given an equal representation and they are not less privileged. These backward classes are still facing poverty and some of them even come under BPL. Moreover, they are also either less educated or illiterate and their economic conditions are mostly the reason behind their illiteracy as they can not afford it.

Although the Indian Reservation system was created with a lot of discussion, on one hand it is advantageous for the backward classes but on the other it has become a malediction for the upper classes (Generals). Let me explain why.

In the system, SCs, STc and OBCs have been given 15%, 7.5% and 27% reservation, respectively. This looks simple and quite good but that's not it. If a person of any backward class gets higher marks than the maximum marks required for their class, they are given the seat of a General. Due to this reason people of General category face problem as their seats get reduced.

So, in order to provide actual equal opportunities this criteria should be changed because while offering opportunities to the backward classes, the upper class people are suffering which is not right.

I believe that reservation is very much important for the society for setting an equal base but with an amendment so that it could work in favour of every social group.
